UN: Road is long until aviation recovery in Latin America, says Icao

Passenger reduction should be 41% to 50% in 2021; last year, the fall reached 60%, pointed out an entity

Leaders in the civil aviation sector in Latin America have already warned of a series of challenges as the region begins to recover the pandemic. The president of Icao (Council of the International Aviation Organization) stated that the sector should return to normal after strong drops in the number of passengers.

Salvatore Sciacchitano spoke at the Hermes Transporte Aéreo event “Resilience and efficiency through leadership and cooperation” in the post-Covid era. Last year, the number of passengers fell by 60%. This year, the projected reduction is 41% to 50%, according to the Icao representative.

Sciacchitano said the Aviation Recovery Task Force has identified new priorities to help international alignment of measures.

The objective is to promote more efficient public-private cooperation between governments and the aviation industry in Latin America. The Task Force also issued guidelines and recommendations for countries' risk management strategies.

Vaccine certificates

The group supports the creation of public health corridors for travel and the promotion of global vaccination in addition to multilateral cargo traffic services. The Chairman of the Board said that these measures are in favor of standardized Covid-19 testing certificates.

For the experts, the crew must also have their vaccination d. There must be safety priorities in the recovery of the sector. Another essential point is that national civil aviation and those in charge of transport advocate more vigorously for public health in air transport.

The profound and long-term implications for traditional air transport models and post-pandemic operations are a concern for industry leaders.

At the moment, the debate is whether this is due to the acceleration of digitalization or higher expectations of passengers for safer and more sustainable travel options after the pandemic.

The President of the Council of Icao also spoke of the current levels of cooperation and information on recovery strategies and lessons learned by countries during the pandemic. For him, Covid-19 is not only a health crisis, but also an economic-financial crisis for governments.

In October, Icao is scheduled to hold a conference on the sector's recovery. Salvatore Sciacchitano praised Latin American countries for liberalizing the regional air cargo agreement to increase vaccine transport and improve long-term recovery conditions.
